    Framing Calculator

Calculate the lumber needed for your wall framing projects, including studs, plates, and headers.

    Calculator

    Framing Materials Required

    Wall Studs:
    28 pieces
    Plates:
    6 pieces
    Headers & Sills:
    6 pieces
    Total Lumber Pieces:
    40 pieces
    Total Linear Feet:
    362.0 ft

This calculation assumes 2x4 or 2x6 lumber for standard residential framing. Includes studs, top and bottom plates, and headers for openings if selected.

    How it Works

This framing calculator helps you determine how much lumber you'll need for wall framing projects, accounting for studs, plates, headers, and additional framing for doors and windows.

    How It Calculates

The calculator uses standard framing practices and formulas:

    • Basic stud count = (Wall length in inches ÷ Stud spacing) + 1
    • Plates needed = Wall length ÷ Standard lumber length (typically 8')
    • Door framing = 2 king studs + 2 jack studs + header per door
    • Window framing = 2 king studs + 2 jack studs + header + sill + cripple studs

    Common Framing Techniques

    • Platform framing: Building one story at a time with the floor system supporting the walls
    • Balloon framing: Wall studs extend continuously from foundation to roof
    • Advanced framing: Uses 24" on-center spacing to reduce lumber use
    • Stack framing: Aligns framing members vertically from foundation to roof for better load transfer

Remember that proper framing is crucial for structural integrity, and local building codes may have specific requirements for your area, especially in regions prone to earthquakes or high winds.
