This stud spacing calculator helps you determine the number of studs needed for your wall framing project and their placement based on standard construction practices.
How It Calculates
The calculator uses these formulas:
- Number of studs = (Wall length in inches ÷ Stud spacing) + 1
- Total lumber needed = Number of studs + Extra studs for corners, openings, and top/bottom plates
Standard Spacing
Building codes typically specify one of these standard spacings:
- 16" on center (OC): Most common in residential construction, required for walls that support a second floor or roof
- 24" on center (OC): Allowed for some non-load-bearing walls, uses less lumber but provides less support
- 12" on center (OC): Used for heavy-duty applications or when high wind or seismic requirements apply
Additional Framing Considerations
Beyond basic stud spacing, wall framing requires:
- Top and bottom plates: Horizontal members that cap the top and bottom of the wall
- Double top plates: Two top plates stacked for load distribution
- Headers: Support above doors and windows
- Jack studs: Support headers at door and window openings
- Cripple studs: Fill in above and below openings
- Corner framing: Additional studs at corners for attaching drywall
