    How It Calculates

    The calculator uses these formulas:

    • Number of studs = (Wall length in inches ÷ Stud spacing) + 1
    • Total lumber needed = Number of studs + Extra studs for corners, openings, and top/bottom plates

    Standard Spacing

    Building codes typically specify one of these standard spacings:

    • 16" on center (OC): Most common in residential construction, required for walls that support a second floor or roof
    • 24" on center (OC): Allowed for some non-load-bearing walls, uses less lumber but provides less support
    • 12" on center (OC): Used for heavy-duty applications or when high wind or seismic requirements apply

    Additional Framing Considerations

    Beyond basic stud spacing, wall framing requires:

    • Top and bottom plates: Horizontal members that cap the top and bottom of the wall
    • Double top plates: Two top plates stacked for load distribution
    • Headers: Support above doors and windows
    • Jack studs: Support headers at door and window openings
    • Cripple studs: Fill in above and below openings
    • Corner framing: Additional studs at corners for attaching drywall
