    How it Works

    How the Patio Calculator Works

Our patio calculator provides a comprehensive estimate for your patio project by calculating material quantities and costs based on several key factors:

    Dimensions and Shape

The calculator uses your patio's length and width (or diameter for circular patios) to determine the total square footage. This area calculation is the foundation for all material estimates and costs.

    Materials

Different patio materials vary significantly in cost and installation requirements:

    • Concrete: Durable and versatile, available in various finishes from basic to stamped or stained.
    • Pavers: Interlocking units available in many shapes and colors, offering good durability and easy repairs.
    • Brick: Classic appearance with excellent durability, though installation is more labor-intensive.
    • Flagstone: Natural stone with unique appearances, typically higher cost but exceptional aesthetics.
    • Gravel: Most economical option, quick to install but requires more maintenance.

    Material Quality

For each material type, you can select from three quality grades that affect pricing:

    • Economy: Basic grade materials at the lowest price point.
    • Standard: Mid-grade materials offering a good balance of quality and cost.
    • Premium: High-end materials with superior durability, appearance, and warranties.

    Site Preparation

Proper site preparation is crucial for a long-lasting patio. The calculator accounts for:

    • Excavation Depth: How deep the area will be dug out, typically 6-8 inches.
    • Base Layer Depth: The thickness of the compacted gravel base, usually 4 inches for residential patios.

    Additional Features

Optional elements that enhance your patio but add to the cost:

    • Decorative Border: A contrasting material edge around the perimeter of the patio.
    • Drainage System: Proper water management components to prevent pooling and erosion.

    Labor Costs

Professional installation typically costs $25-35 per square foot, depending on material and complexity. The calculator includes this if selected.

    Planning Tips

    For the most accurate estimate:

    • Get multiple contractor quotes to compare with our estimate
    • Consider local material availability and pricing variations
    • Check local building codes and permit requirements
    • Plan for proper drainage away from your home's foundation
    • Add 5-10% extra material for cuts, waste, and replacements
