How It Calculates
The calculator follows a simplified version of the National Electrical Code (NEC) method for calculating residential electrical loads:
- It starts with a base load calculation for general lighting (3 watts per square foot)
- Adds standard small appliance branch circuits (1500 watts each for kitchen, laundry, etc.)
- Adds bedroom circuits (180 watts per bedroom)
- Adds the wattage of any specific appliances you select
- Converts the total wattage to amperage (by dividing by 240 volts for a standard residential service)
- Recommends an appropriate service size based on the calculated load
Understanding Electrical Service Sizes
Residential electrical service typically comes in these standard sizes:
- 100 amps: Minimum for most homes, suitable for small homes with limited electrical appliances
