How it Works
This carpet calculator helps you determine how much carpet you'll need for your project and estimates the total cost based on your selections.
How It Calculates
The formula used is: Carpet Area = Room Area × (1 + Waste Factor)
The calculator determines the total area by multiplying length by width for each room. It then adds a waste factor percentage to account for cuts, matching patterns, and irregularities in the room shape.
About the Waste Factor
Including a waste factor is essential for carpet installation:
- 10%: Standard for rectangular rooms with minimal cuts
- 15%: Recommended for rooms with several corners or obstacles
- 20%: For complex layouts, patterned carpet, or diagonal installations
Additional Considerations
- Carpet is typically sold in 12-foot wide rolls in the US
- For rooms wider than 12 feet, seams will be necessary
- Consider purchasing extra carpet for future repairs
- Don't forget to include underlayment and installation supplies in your budget
